This study is the result of a research project of the same name that was carried out on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) in cooperation with 3s (Stefan Humpl and Tanja Bacher) between September 2017 and August 2018.

The study ‘Job descriptions and employment prospects in an automated and digitised Austrian mobility sector 2040’ (Berufsbilder und Chancen für die Beschäftigung in einem automatisierten und digitalisierten österreichischen Mobilitätssektor 2040) deals with the emerging and coming changes in the job descriptions relevant for the Austrian mobility sector up to the year 2040, as well as the resulting opportunities and risks for employment and quality of work against the background of increasing automation and digitisation.

Three scenarios ("Forwards 2040", "Local life", "Digital divide") with a time horizon of 2040 were developed for analysis that were discussed and evaluated with various stakeholders from all modes of transport including freight and passenger transport. The discussion and evaluation of the three partially contradictory scenarios illustrated many parallels between the scenarios, so that an overall picture could be drawn for the future of employment, occupational profiles, competences, quality of work and gender in the mobility sector. From these findings, concrete fields of action were derived for politicians and interest groups (mobility and transport policy, RTI policy, labour market and social policy, education policy) as well as for companies.

The study was financed by the bmvit and conducted by AIT in cooperation with 3s.
