Mobile learning for enhancing key competences of autonomous workers and owners of SME from the road transport (m-road)

The road transport sector created more than 5 million jobs and a turnover of about 432,331million € in 2011 (Statistical Pocketbook (2011, EC). However, the current economic crisis is affecting the sector considerably. Therefore, an adequately trained workforce comprising the relevant knowledge, skills and competences required on the labour market are necessary.

The road transport sector created more than 5 million jobs and a turnover of about 432,331million € in 2011 (Statistical Pocketbook (2011, EC). However, the current economic crisis is affecting the sector considerably. Therefore, an adequately trained workforce comprising the relevant knowledge, skills and competences required on the labour market are necessary.

As people working in the road transport sector are mobile within boarders or across countries, it is necessary to provide suitable and flexible learning environments in order to provide adequately skilled workers in the sector. The report “Key Competences for Lifelong Learning” establishes 8 key competences which are important for competing in a continuously changing world. The m-road project addressed self-employed workers and owners of SMEs from the road transport sector. These target groups need innovative and flexible ways to access VET in order to enhance their key competences. Therefore, m-road project intended to develop a mobile learning training tool to increase the entrepreneurial and digital competences of these target groups which are completely necessary to compete proficiently, have sustainable businesses, create employment and face new demands and crisis.
