This year’s Vocational Training Research Conference (BBFK) took place from 5 to 6 July 2018 in Steyr (Upper Austria).
The motto of the event was ’Education = Vocational Training?!’ The team of 3s was again involved with numerous contributions. The equation of education and vocational training (with a question mark and an exclamation mark) in the title of the conference invited a critical examination of the concept of vocational training. General and professional issues are in constant change when it comes to their respective relation to education interpreted as the self-education of man. It is about the question of how people want to locate themselves professionally and non-professionally in this world The idea of education in or about the profession/vocational references is almost exclusively anchored in the German-speaking world.
In 2018, the focus was therefore on the question of whether general issues at work and work in general issues might lead to a reorientation of our educational world? As in previous times, the 3s team again made active contributions to the conference, both in the form of technical presentations and through active participation in expert forums and the assumption of management functions:
- Maria Kargl chaired a thematic forum on ‘Lack of skilled workers: characteristics, backgrounds and consequences’.
- Tanja Bacher and Karin Luomi-Messerer gave a lecture on ‘Career paths of VET graduates: Analysis of the differences and similarities of national measures for the follow-up of vocational education and training graduates in EU member states’.
- Jörg Markowitsch chaired a thematic forum on ‘Unequal brothers and sisters? On the Development and Future of Vocational Education and Training in Austria, Germany and Switzerland’.
- Janine Wulz presented the project ‘SPREAD – The contribution of mobility agencies to the qualitative development of mobility in vocational education and training in Europe’ and, together with Monika Auzinger, the project ‘Women Entrepreneurs – Transforming European Women’s Entrepreneurship: The Education and Training for Success Programme’ as part of the poster exhibition.
