The 7EU-VET data set – A new source for cross-country comparative research on IVET

By end of 2012, a new cross-country comparative micro data set, covering representative samples of IVET (Initial Vocational Education and Training) students in Austria (3s), England, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Latvia and Slovenia is made available via CESSDA and the participating data archives, respectively.

The data set, collected mid  2011 and covering more than 17,000 individuals out of more than 1,500 classes and 600 IVET schools, has been established within the 7EU-VET – Detailed Methodological Approach to Understanding Vocational Education and Training Systems – project, a three-year partnership led by the University of Ljubljana and financed within the European Union’s Lifelong Learning Programme. More information on the project, summary tables of the survey results and the final report (forthcoming) can be found on the project website. The data set covers a wide range of topics (refer to http://www.7eu-vet.org/uploadi/editor/1309422962pupil_master.pdf) and allows for detailed analysis of differences within and across participating countries. With the exception of England, it is possible to compare results between school classes, providing insight into the differences in perceptions and opinions of students sharing the same school environment. Project partners have explored the analytical power of the data set with regard to various selected topics (e.g. on the use of IT in IVET, on reported plans for further education), however, much space is left for further analysis by the international research community.
