Over the past years, doctoral training has developed new forms to respond to the evolving needs of the job market, be it the academic or business sectors. The report focuses on the factors shaping doctoral training in Europe and provides a list of open questions related to the future of doctoral training. Furthermore, it presents the state of the art of doctoral education regarding incentives, quality, access and intent as well as the integration of researcher into the European labour market.
The report is used as a background document for the international conference on the ‘Future of the doctorate’, organised by the European Commission and held in Riga on 28-29 May 2015. 3s (Janine Wulz) contributed to the report by analysing new approaches in teaching and learning in doctoral education.
